Healthy and inactive people generally produce enough L-carnitine to not have to supplement with it. However, L-carnitine might be important for vegetarians and vegans who don’t get enough in their plant-based diets. People with diets low in animal products are adapted to absorb more L-carnitine and therefore a supplement can greatly increase levels within the body. Older people also have naturally lower L-carnitine levels so may benefit from taking a supplement. Active people need more L-carnitine than inactive people. This is because they burn more energy and their cellular turnover of L-carnitine happens at a greater rate than inactive people.
