What is the protein content of WPC?
VPA Premium Whey protein concentrate has 24 grams of protein per serving size of 30 grams of WPC protein powder. Our whey protein 1 kg packs have 33 servings.
How is Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC) manufactured?
The process of obtaining WPC protein begins with the removal of water from pasteurised skim milk. As previously explained, milk contains two major proteins: casein and whey. Casein, the primary protein, makes up about 80% of the total protein content, while whey accounts for around 20%. Below is a summary of the typical method for manufacturing WPC powder. First, the milk is pasteurised for a short time and then held overnight. Next, the mixture undergoes the cheese-making process, producing curds and liquid whey. The liquid whey is drained through a stainless steel screen, and the remaining curd is cut. The whey liquid is then filtered, reducing it to one-fifth of its original volume, resulting in a whey concentrate that is approximately 80% protein. The final WPC protein is spray-dried to produce whey protein powder. VPA Australia WPC is processed using proprietary ultra-filtration techniques, resulting in undenatured, high-quality soluble whey proteins.
What are the benefits of using Whey Protein Concentrate?
Reduce muscle loss and enhance recovery: Years of research have shown that supplementing with milk proteins, particularly whey proteins, can reduce muscle loss due to their high L-leucine content (Walzem et al., 2002). Additionally, the high L-glutamine content helps restore energy efficiently after intense workouts, improving recovery.
Increase strength and muscle growth: Boire et al. demonstrated that men participating in resistance training programs while supplementing with whey proteins showed greater improvements in strength compared to those using resistance training alone. This is mainly due to the high Branched Chain Amino Acid (BCAA) content in whey protein. The quality of a protein for enhancing muscle mass and strength is closely related to its leucine content.
Enhance protein synthesis - Whey proteins can contain up to 26% BCAA, which are efficient substances for synthesising new proteins. Leucine acts as a signalling molecule for the initiation of protein synthesis.
Increase bioavailability of essential amino acids - Research found that the amino acid profile in individuals’ dietary proteins influences their nitrogen utilisation. This means poor quality dietary protein intake has been shown to increase nitrogen losses and limit protein synthesis, therefore ingestion of whey proteins containing high essential amino acids can reduce nitrogen losses (Boire et al, 1997).
